Disney-branded Facebook games coming in 2012, Playdom head says
Can we all just say, “finally?” During a panel named “The Rise of Social Games” at the f8 Facebook Developers Conference in San Francisco, Disney Interactive and Playdom head John Pleasants revealed that two to four Facebook games surrounding Disney xd brands will hit Facebook in 2012. The general topic of the panel was the fact that branded social games are taking off.
Pleasants was joined on the panel by Kabam CEO Kevin Chou, EA Interactive head Barry Cottle and Zynga CBO Owen Van Natta. Facebook director of games partnerships Sean Ryan moderated the panel with the preface that branded games will take over the Facebook platform. And he might be right: EA just released The Sims Social, Zynga will soon re-brand its new Adventure World with Indiana Jones and Kabam recently announced The Godfather: Five Families.
Playdom, which Disney acquired in July 2010 for a whopping $740 million, is ahead of the pack with two branded games on Facebook: ESPNU College Town and ESPN Sports Bar & Grill. Both games performed well, thanks to advertising through the ESPN TV network. While Disney owns the ESPN brand, notice how neither of those actually involve the insanely popular Disney characters we’ve come to love.
Honestly, we’re surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Consider this: Disney has its own cable TV channel through which it could, in theory, advertise whatever it wants. Pleasants didn’t get into why it’s taken this long for disney channel games to throw its cast of characters into Facebook games, but did reveal the power of the Disney name.
Gnome Town, which Playdom launched in the summer–and we enjoyed quite a bit–peaked at 530,000 daily players. But just plopping the Disney logo on top of the existing one made users more likely to spend in the game just through trust of the company’s name, according to Pleasants. “We think it’s an advantage, if you put game play first,” Pleasants said.
It’s comforting to hear this emphasized by these developers. (Kabam’s Chou shared the same sentiment.) Branded games on Facebook are OK in my book, but the last thing anyone wants to see is the genre become a branding machine.

These DIY robots in The Sims Social show the fun power of stacking
Stacking has taken off in The Sims Social. Even today's Pic of the Day employs the power of stacking in a big way. But this just might be the coolest use of the stacking glitch yet: robots. (Playfish, please don't fix this anytime soon?) First, we have player Ferry Darmawan who used an MSS Hoojamaflip for a head, Hi-Fi System legs, a Haunted TV for its chest and backpack made possible by a Nice Cold Fridge.
The second robot (pictured below), created by player samuiiTSSindo, is a little less visually impressive, but features quite the finishing touch. This creation is essentially a robot made up of various cabinets with old TVs for shoulders and ... a Sim using the toilet for its head. Now that's what we call a brain fart--cue the rimshot. We're here all--ah, never mind.
Player base slowly in decline or not, the creative community in The Sims Social is thriving at this point. And that's a good sign that players are still digging the game. Do you have unique creations in The Sims Social? Then send us an email with an image of your work to editors@games.com and we'll try to feature it in our The Sims Social Pic of the Day. With legit DIY robots roaming around players' homes, you have quite a lot to live up to, so get to creating.

Adventure World Jungle Approach Expedition: Everything you need to know
Indiana Jones has finally made his way into Adventure World, triggering not only a change to the game's name - Indiana Jones Adventure World - but also the launch of the Calendar of the Sun quest / expedition series, that sees Indy himself asking for your help in completing a series of five new Expeditions. The first, Jungle Approach, is the only one available to start, as you'll need to complete each Expedition in order before unlocking the next. For Jungle Approach, you'll need to have just 50 Supplies, along with a single Food, Fuel and Water, and will then be given four days to complete everything within. Here's a guide to doing just that.
Adventure With Indy
Use 3 Statue Trap Disarms
Use 2 Spear Trap Disarms
Clear 4 Snakes for Indy
Investigate the Standing Stone
These Calendar of the Sun Expeditions have completely new maps, but their basic setups are similar to what you've encountered before. There are the usual levers to pull to disarm traps, and there are snakes and pieces of debris blocking your path to the Standing Stone at the end. Taking a page from Indiana Jones lore, the adventurer doesn't like snakes so you'll need to clear some out as you go along. The Standing Stone is covered in vines and flowers at the very end of the trail.
Why'd It Have to Be Snakes?
Open the Society Supply Crate
Ask for 8 Rubber Stoppers
Apply Rubber Stoppers to 8 Snake Burrows
As we said above, Indy hates snakes, so you'll need to ask your friends for stoppers (using a general news post) to plug the holes. As for the Supply Crate, this is found directly over the first bridge in the area, but by this point, Indy will be leading you along and there's no way you'll be able to miss it.
Out of Time
Recover the Extinct Flower
Recover the Extinct Fern
Recover the Extinct Shrub
This map contains some very interesting wildlife, as it contains three types of plants that were originally thought to be extinct. You'll need to gather these specimens and take them back to Base Camp with you. Remember, if you can't find one just by looking at the map, head into the quest window and click on the "Show Me" button for a particular plant.
All told, this first Expedition in the Calendar of the Sun series is incredibly easy, as Indy will perform many actions for you, granting you extra energy in the process. If you didn't have to ask your friends for the Rubber Stoppers, you could easily finish this entire Expedition in a single sitting, but as it stands, will likely be stuck waiting for your friends' help. Once you finish this Expedition, you'll unlock the second in this series, and we'll make sure to bring you a complete guide to finishing that Expedition as soon as we can.

Pioneer Trail Get Ready for Holiday Hollow: Everything you need to know
While there are still a few days separating us from a trip to Holiday Hollow in Pioneer Trail, that doesn't mean you can't get into the Christmas spirit now, as the "Get Ready for Holiday Hollow" gift exchange event has launched, giving you goals to complete and presents to receive while we wait for Holiday Hollow itself to launch.
First things first, you'll have a new goal to complete once this feature rolls around to your game (you'll need to be Level 15 or above to access it).
The Baker's Delight
Tend 20 Adult Sheep
Craft Holiday Bakers Outfit
Watch Holiday Hollow Video
The Holiday Bakers Outfit is crafted using one Holiday Apron and 12 Holiday Mitts. The Holiday Apron itself is crafted using 10 Fine Wool Thread (gathered by tending sheep) and eight Holiday Cloths. These cloths are earned by asking your friends to send them to you. Once you've made the Apron, you'll need to collect the 12 Holiday Mitts from friends to create the ultimate Holiday Bakers Outfit.
With this done, you'll receive one Large Red Present, 300 XP and 300 coins. When you open this present, you'll receive the Holiday Hollow sign, which works as a building in that you can collect a Daily Bonus from it once every 24 hours. This gives you Candy Canes, which are like the Charms of Ghost Town in that you'll need to collect more and more of them to earn better prizes once Holiday Hollow proper launches.
Now that we've been introduced to Nettie the Baker from Holiday Hollow, we'll meet Murt the Chimney Sweep.
Capturing the Town
Clear 10 Rocks on your Homestead of a Neighbors'
Harvest 20 Sugar Plums
Craft Snow Globe
The Snow Globe is crafted using two Glass Globes and 20 Ceramic Miniatures. The Glass Globes are created using two Pure Grain Sand (earned by clearing rocks) and eight Glass Cutters, which are earned by asking friends. The Ceramic Miniatures are also earned by asking your friends to send them to you. Meanwhile, Sugar Plums are a crop that take four hours to harvest. For finishing this goal, you'll receive a Large Blue Present, 400 XP and 400 coins.
This Large Blue Present contains a Holiday Mantle which will also give you Candy Canes as a daily bonus when you collect them. Finally, you'll be challenged with a third themed goal.
A Nutty Surprise
Chop Pine Trees 30 Times
Harvest 20 Peppermint Trees
Craft Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is crafted using two Wooden Soldiers and 30 Strong Hinges. The Wooden Soldiers are another crafting project, created using eight Fine Pine and 10 Whittling Knives each. The Knives and Strong Hinges are earned by simply asking your friends to send them to you, while the Fine Pine are earned by chopping down Large or XL Pine Trees on your Homestead.
For finishing this third and final goal in the "Get Ready for Holiday Hollow" series, you'll receive a Large Green Present and 500 XP. You'll also unlock the ability to purchase and plant Jumbo Canes (jumbo Candy Canes) as a crop in the store. With both this crop and the Sugar Plum crop above, there will of course be new collections to complete, each of which offers you Candy Canes as a reward.
Once Holiday Hollow itself launches, and we're able to travel to this Christmas-themed village, we'll make sure to let you know what to expect once you too arrive, along with what all of those hard-earned Candy Canes will get you. Keep checking back with us!
