Cafe World Holiday Tree: Everything you need to know

If you thought this week's release of the Holiday Dinner catering order would be the end of the Holiday celebration in Cafe World, then Zynga has released a new feature today that is sure to surprise you. The new item is the Holiday Tree, which, like every other buildable in Cafe World, starts out as a simple tree, sans decorations, and must be "constructed" by adding various ingredients to the tree, like lights, bells, and of course, ornaments.

You'll need the help of friends to put this tree together, but it will be worth it, as users that finish building the tree will have a chance at earning free bundles of coins or even free Cafe Cash every single day from December 24 to January 5 just for doing so.

Want to know how you can potentially get your hands on some much-needed Cafe Cash? Meet us behind the break for full details on this new feature.

This is one case where money really will grow on trees, but only if you can help the tree itself grow first. The next time you login to the game, you'll see a pop-up like the one at the top of this post, introducing you to the event, and allowing you to place your entirely plain, generic evergreen tree in your cafe. Of course, a plain evergreen tree simply won't due for a true holiday celebration, so you'll need to finish building and decorating it by collecting four ingredients: Fairy Lights, Chimes, Baubles (ornaments), and Exotic Ornaments.

Since the ultimate goal of this feature is for all users to have the tree completed before December 24, Zynga has mercifully lowered the required number of ingredients from previous building events. This time around, you'll still need to collect 10 of the Fairy Lights, but only five Chimes and Baubles. All three of these are earned by clicking on the "Ask for More" button associated with that item, and then sending out individual gift requests to friends that you think would answer your call for help.

As for the Exotic Ornaments, this actually brings in an entirely different feature for the buildable, as you'll need to click on the "Collect" button in the tree's menu (as seen above), and then follow the menu that appears to head over to Treasure Isle, where you can find the exotic ornament you need for your tree.

By clicking on the "Play Treasure Isle" button, Treasure Isle will load in a new window, where you'll be given the specifics. You'll need to level up to at least level 5, and find any five treasures while playing the game to be "granted a Basket of Ornaments."

Depending on whether or not you've played Treasure Isle in the past, and on what level you are in the game overall, you may be able to finish this task in one sitting, but most players, especially newer players, will have to come back to the game more than once to finish the task. Still, since the other three Holiday Tree ingredients require you to wait for your friends to send you items, the cross-promotion with Treasure Isle at least gives you a way to occupy your time while you wait.

If at any time you'd like to stop waiting for your friends' help, you can purchase your remaining ingredients for 2 Cafe Cash each. You can even skip the Treasure Isle promotion entirely if you'd like to pay 8 Cafe Cash to do so. Additionally, if you really hate building things and want to purchase a completed tree outright, you can do that too, as a finished Holiday Tree is available under the Special Items section of the game's Functional Store (click on the gears, and then the blue gem) for 45 Farm Cash.

Once the tree has been completed, and once December 24 arrives, you'll be awarded a free prize from the tree once per day just for playing the game. Zynga has confirmed that these prizes will either be coins, or even free Cafe Cash, although they didn't announce in what quantities either would be given away (that is, whether you could win up to 1 Cafe Cash per day, 10, 100, or so on).

Either way, if you're done with the Holiday catering orders in Cafe World, this seems like more than a decent replacement for how to spend your time in the game.

My Shops on Facebook: Why build just one store, when you can build them all?

While there are plenty of Facebook games that allow you to start managing a single kind of business or store (a restaurant, a clothing store, electronics store, and so on), what if you were instead given a game where you could create an entire "Shopping Street," rather than just a single store? Pretty Simple Games will allow you to make that hypothetical scenario into a reality, with their Facebook game My Shops.

The game launched in the middle of November, and has since grown to almost 140,000 users - not bad for a game from a little-known developer, in a genre that is already quite full. If you'd like to see what it takes to run more than one business at once, then meet us behind the break for more details about this up-and-coming business management sim.

My Shops begins with a basic tutorial in your first shop - a Bakery. The game's street view is presented much like the Street View in Restaurant City, for those that are familiar, as it is a flat image that can be scrolled through left and right to see your various buildings, or even open new ones.

Through the tutorial, you'll learn that the game is filled with a large variety of customers, each of which has different demands represented by thought bubbles. These thought bubbles contain images of what a customer wants to help you keep track. Via these thought bubbles, you'll be able to keep track of which items will be hot sellers, and can then order goods from the shipping menu accordingly. To start, at your Bakery you'll meet customers that want either bread or croissants, so you'll need to order both kinds of goods to be delivered on a delivery truck.

This is where the game's timer comes in, as you'll need to wait for the delivery trucks to arrive, with different travel times being available for the different items that you could purchase. You'll need to be on-hand to accept the delivery when it does arrive (increasing the incentive for repeat returns on a daily basis), and from there, your shop will automatically go about the business of selling goods. Your total stock is represented as meters in the bottom left corner of the gameplay screen, and you'll be able to see when a good will sell out based on how many hours that stock will last given the store's current popularity.

With your stores supplied, you'll be able to tackle a series of missions (upgrade your buildings, add certain decorations, and so on) or you can choose to upgrade your customers. In terms of customer upgrading, when a customer leaves your store satisfied, they will have a red heart appear above their head. Clicking on this heart earns your business a recommendation, and when enough of the same variety of customer recommend your business, you'll be able to unlock new kinds of customers, with entirely different sets of demands.

These customers may wish to purchase items you don't have in stock, which either means you can unlock them from the game's store (in the case of entirely new items), or you can simply wait for your current stock of items to empty and then order more of that particular item in the next Delivery Truck.

As you go along, you can increase the popularity of your shops by increasing their "Beauty," or adding decorations. Considering the time of year, there are some incredibly adorable Holiday decorations currently available, for those that are interested in that sort of thing. Otherwise, you can choose from decorative baskets, flower pots, street lamps, trees, bicycles and more, to make each individual building on your street look customized and unique (you'll need to customize stores for missions, but you can do this voluntarily as well).

Of course, your buildings can also be upgraded in terms of size (allowing you to hold more goods in your stock), with starter upgrades being available for coins, so that the average user can upgrade their Starter Bakery twice without running out of their beginning stock of coins, which is appreciated. Delivery Trucks can also be upgraded, but this requires you to collect building parts.

Since the game is all about opening up additional shops, it seems odd that you won't be able to do so without at least reaching level five. Not that this is an incredibly difficult milestone to reach in terms of gameplay, but levels do see to take a bit longer to complete than in other games of this type (that being the business-management sim). Once you start leveling up, you'll be able to get your hands on new shops like Pet Shops, Cake Shops, and more.

All in all, though, we're definitely pleased with what My Shops has to offer so far. If you're willing to climb your way to level 5 and finally start unlocking additional shop locations, then we'd suggest giving this one a look.

Earn 2 free FarmVille Farm Cash in Yogi Bear promotion

Hey farmers! Want to earn two free Farm Cash in FarmVille, for doing nothing more than a few clicks? Of course you do! That's why Zynga has joined forces with Warner Bros. to offer a new promotion in FarmVille concerning Warner Bros. new film Yogi Bear. I guess we can see the connection here - Yogi Bear lives in nature in Jellystone Park, and FarmVille takes place in nature - sure, it works.

Either way, if you'd like to participate in this new promotion, simply head to the bottom of the FarmVille gameplay area and click on the "Sponsored Link" image as seen at the right side of this post. Note: If you have other Farm Cash promotions that you have not yet participated in, you may not see this newest one until you have completed those, thus "clearing the way" for the new promotion to appear, as it were.

From there, you'll load a new window where you are asked to share your favorite location to have a "pic-a-nic," a nod to the Bear's famous wording of "Picnic." After submitting your answer, you'll know that you've completed the activity and earned your Farm Cash when the top right corner of this new window loads text that tells you outright that you've earned your Farm Cash.

Activity completed, simply close the Yogi Bear window and your FarmVille game should automatically update to reflect your 2 new Farm Cash. However, if it doesn't, a simple refresh of the game should do the trick.

CityVille: Inventory limit increased, some quests are now easier to complete

Proving that they don't want to let their long-term, or even new fans down, Zynga has released another set of tweaks and alterations for their newest game, the city-building game called CityVille.

Most importantly, the first change sees an increase in each user's maximum inventory from the base of 100 items (this includes all items, from energy and decorative free gifts to Zoning Permits, building materials and so on) to a whopping 250 items of space - that's 150 additional items that you can now store for future use! While it might seem unreasonable for users to have that many items on hand at once, with so many free gifts being passed around, we definitely appreciate the higher cushion. Even if we never reach the 250 item limit ourselves, its nice to not have to worry about running out of room anytime soon.

In addition, some quests have been altered slightly in the game. Starting with the Cinema Investment Quest (which sees you unlocking access to the Cinema in your town - seems to be available to users around level 20 or above, depending on your progress with other quests), you were originally asked to collect 50,000 coins, that would apparently be taken from you once you've collected them. Now, though, the amount of coins has been raised to a whopping 120,000. While this might seem like a negative change, as opposed to a positive, these coins now will not be taken from you. However, you will need 100,000 of those 120,000 coins to purchase the Cinema, so it basically evens itself out.

Other quests, like the "Feed the Fans" and "Restaurant Food" quests have been clarified or made a bit easier by the additions of hints, which is definitely appreciated. Not only that, but more causes of Out of Sync errors have been fixed, and the glitch with bonus goods received from going up a Reputation Level has also been eliminated, ensuring that all users receive the free goods that they deserve after working in friends' cities.

It's just great to see Zynga offering so much support to CityVille, especially so early on. We hope that they continue this dedication in the future, and we'll be sure to let you know how other changes will affect your gameplay experience should they arise.

FarmVille: Snow Stallions can now be placed in Stables

If you were one of the many FarmVille players affected by a recent glitch in the game, that caused your Snow Stallion to be left out in the cold, unable to be placed inside the Horse Stable, you'll be happy to know that Zynga has addressed the issue, and has announced a fix for the problem via the game's forums.

The announcement is a small one, and it simply states that "the issue was resolved" in a game update, but we'll take brevity over a longer explanation of why it may not have been possible. Luckily, this now means that those users that were waiting on purchasing a Snow Stallion for 500 presents can do so without the fear of the item being "broken" in any way.

For those that still haven't gotten their hands on a Snow Stallion, you can purchase the Horse (as we mentioned above) for 500 presents after you "overfill" the Holiday Tree's gift meter, which rests at 300 presents. You can also try your hand at the Winter Whimsy gift box, which has been confirmed to hold the Snow Stallion inside, to be given very rarely out to users (who happen to be very lucky).

UNO Boost on Facebook: A goofy, give-and-take twist on the original

The fast track, scream-inducing card game, UNO, has reintroduced itself to Facebook with a new look and feel. UNO Boost puts the classic in unique, new packaging that publisher Game House hopes will spur virtual goods purchases and that UNO fans will appreciate. Game House took the original Facebook card game and... didn't do much to it.

Well, aside from taking Boost cards, turning them into both a strategic tactic and a commodity, and apparently removing what made the original so enjoyable. UNO Boost, while introducing an element that could launch its fun and strategy levels into the stratosphere, inexplicably removed the live play feature found in the original Facebook rendition. Game House giveth new features and taketh away defining ones.

Find the rest of our impressions of UNO Boost after the break.

UNO Boost in actions
All things considered, the core gameplay of UNO in UNO Boost remains unchanged. The color switching, number matching and quick turning still remains, but Game House turned Boost cards into more of a conscious decision than ever. While players can still draw Skip, Draw and Wild Cards, they can also replace cards in their hand with Boost Cards at will. These Boost Cards come from a pool that will recharge once daily, but can also be purchased using Coins. This currency, which accumulates from matches won, can be purchased from within the game using several methods including credit cards (but no Facebook Credits yet, sorry folks).

Boost CardsAlso found in the store are new characters to play against, individual Boost Cards and Boost Packs. Notice my use of the word "characters." These are the guys who have seemingly replaced your friends in UNO Boost (the ability to add friends is currently bugged in my experience). The personally-adored live play feature (complete with chat room) in the original UNO for Facebook is, hopefully for now, no more. Imagine the possibilities of being able to play Boost Cards against your friends in real time, shifting the playing field in an instant under your control. Sure, things would get crazy quickly, but that's what UNO is all about, right?

Instead, your friends are merely people to compare scores with this time around as you play characters like Kevin the Coach and Oog, a cave man. Opponents increase in difficulty level as you increase in player level, which is determined by how badly you defeat opponents in matches. Your experience points earned for each successful match is a combination of the numbers on his cards multiplied by the character's difficulty level and other factors. Basically, the more cards your opponent has in his hand when you win, the more experience points you gain for winning.

UNO Boost is a fun way to waste some time thanks to the brand new Boost Card system, but without the live play feature of the original it could loose steam quickly. Hopefully this is added to the game at a later time, because Boost Cards plus live play and chat could make for a huge success.

Bejeweled Blitz tutorial video says, 'Multiplier cubes are your friend'

Want to rake in those high scores in Bejeweled Blitz like those friends of yours who seem to have way too much time on their hands? Well, listen to this guy and you might be well on your way. YouTube user bejeweledtips, who claims his real name is Wladscaw, posted a highly educational and even more entertaining video describing the power of what he calls "multiplier cubes." First, Wladscaw demonstrates a normal level in which he manages to achieve Blazing Speed, but still comes away with under 100 thousand points.

Enter the "multiplier cube." In his second round, Wladscaw scores over 300 thousand points with relative ease using multiplier cubes. And thankfully, this well-informed and articulate fellow goes into detail of just how he did it. Apparently, blowing up 12 jewels in a row will multiply your score for every subsequent set of jewels destroyed. When you reach upwards of seven multiplier cubes, that turns out to be a ton of points. But we'll admit, Wladscaw's enchanting Russian accent does a much better job of explaining than my hideous Philadelphian accent ever could, so enjoy. Check out his YouTube channel for even more tutorial videos. Now, if only our friend Wladscaw would start producing Zuma Blitz tutorials.

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Fiorland Penguin, Koala, Caribou and more

    Fiorland Penguin     Caribou     Koala
See, I told you it wouldn't be long before Zynga thought up some more stuff. Soon, there will be a whole new set of animals and decorations to play around with in FarmVille. Thanks to FarmVille Freak, we have images of four new animals that may or may not appear in the game sometime soon. This time around a Fiorland Penguin might join us as well as a Koala, a Caribou and a Prz Foal.

While all four of these critters are equally adorable, that Prz Foal is most intriguing. Why? Well, because I previously had no idea where in the world it came from. As it turns out, its full name is the Przwalski's Horse and it currently reigns from Mongolia and China, but that's only after the breed was declared extinct for time. Thankfully, it was declared "critically endangered" by the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species in 2008 thanks to the reintroduction efforts by wildlife organizations in Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan. And soon, you might be able to raise one of your on your farm. Isn't digital life great?

Q-Games bringing PixelJunk Monsters to social networks this year

At this year's Casual Connect in Seattle, Q-Games revealed some exciting news for fans of the PixelJunk series - their popular tower defense title PixelJunk Monsters will be receiving the social treatment later this year. While a specific social network for release wasn't announced, we can only guess that it will at least come to Facebook, and potentially even Google+ Games (depending on its release).

As reported by Gamasutra, this social (and more importantly free-to-play) version of the PSN title will hold onto the established tower defense gameplay found in the original (you'll need to place towers, containing weapons, in order to defeat all of the enemies before they can take over your base), but will include some changes for the social space. First, enemies will now move down a single set path. You'll also be able to plant seeds to create towers in new locations. The level map will be grid-based inside of linear, and you'll be able to unlock additional stages and map locations by collecting and using shovels. What does all of this mean? Without knowing any additional details, it at least sounds like things are going to be made a bit more casual, in that players that aren't as experienced with tower defense games will still be able to defend themselves as they'll know exactly where the enemies will walk over time, as the path is clearly marked.

In terms of social features, you'll still be able to climb leaderboards against your friends based on your high scores, but any other social features weren't announced at the time (unfortunately). We were given one small idea to think about though - while there was no confirmation that co-op gameplay would be available (as in the PSN version of the game), Q-Games also hasn't denied it, as of this writing. I'll leave that one in the category of cautious optimism, if you don't mind. Score!

Zynga City, the Chinese CityVille, launches on Tencent platforms soon

As Far Eastern companies attempt to enter U.S. social gamers' devices, American companies like Zynga are already abroad. Zynga announced a partnership with Tencent, a leading Internet service provider in China, to launch Zynga City in open beta on Pengyou in the country.

The game, essentially a Chinese version of its mega hit CityVille, is set to launch on the Pengyou network within a few days. From there, Tencent plans to make the game accessible on QZone, its main social games platform.

If you remember correctly, CityVille was the first Zynga game to release in multiple languages at launch. But localizations for regions like China and Japan take far longer, as the divide between our two countries is arguably more cultural than with other nations like in Western Europe.
Zynga City street peddler
Chinese Zynga City players will enjoy items, quests and other content that is heavily influenced by Chinese culture, according to a statement. But the game will also have game mechanics that stem from Chinese cultural nuances, like the ability to send street peddlers to your friends' cities.

The development and continued support for Zynga City will be handled by Zynga China, acquired by the company when it was still XPD Media over a year ago. While the game will first release on a few Tencent platforms, eventually the company plans for Zynga City to be played over several platforms--including Pengyou, Weibo, QQ games, QZone and Q+--within Tencent's Open Platform. Now, will this count toward CityVille's already 80 million players? If that's the case, then the competition has a city's worth of work on its plate.

No More Heroes Royal could be the bloodiest social game ever

Yes, because that's what attracts the middle-aged ladies ... blood. (Well, ladies of the fanged persuasion.) Suda 51, the creator of the stylish, gory No More Heroes franchise, is working on an Android-based social version titled No More Heroes Royal, Tom's Hardware reports. When DeNA announced its Super Creators program yesterday containing deals with major Japanese game designers like the creators of Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog, another of those developers was Goichi Suda, better known as Suda 51 of Grasshopper Manufacture.

However, what we didn't know then was that the designer plots to create a seriously sanguine social game. "We're aiming to make it the social game with the most blood," Suda said during the conference. He added that not only does he want the game to have "power" and "impact," but he also wants it to succeed overseas. Meaning the U.S. ... meaning American smartphones.

While Suda reportedly has over 100 ideas for social games, the No More Heroes game is aimed for a winter release, and will be the first of many. As for the games created under DeNA's Super Creators program, they'll all be published by AQ Interactive and released over Mobage, the Ngmoco-powered mobile social games platform that looks to set the world on fire. Or, you know, drown it in digital blood.

Global Resistance is Insomniac's irresistible Resistance 3 promotion

Well, at least it looks the part. Insomniac, creator of the Ratchet and Clank series, has unleashed Global Resistance, a Facebook-connected social game to promote the upcoming release of Resistance 3 for the Sony PS3, Gaming Union reports. The game, which is said to play much like Risk--which ironically will have a Facebook version of its own soon enough--will unlock exclusive content in the PS3 shooter. Inversely, playing the shooter will bolster your forces in the social game.

Players are forced to side with either the humans in this alternate WWII reality, or the Chimera, an alien race that's a cross between The Thing and the Body Snatchers. Players will gather troops and attempt to take over regions of the world using the vast war map across rounds that last for hours in wars that last for days--seven days, to be exact. Your military decisions are aided with color-coded icons that help you judge your forces against the enemy's.

However, the game appears to be extremely complicated, and generally skewed to the hardcore, war-mongering gamer. Luckily, the game takes on a few Facebook game cues like Missions. These, like Goals in FarmVille, direct players on what to do next in order to unlock content in Resistance 3. Players must even create and maintain their own military base to create new troops to launch Missions with--that sounds a lot like Empires & Allies, no? (Not to mention the battle system, an asynchronous affair with players trading pre-planned attacks much similar to Mafia Wars.)

Global Resistance
Perhaps Global Resistance is the first move by Insomniac Click, a social games division within the studio that recently opened for business. Regardless, this is an impressive endeavor in both looks and scope that Resistance fans will surely love. Now, we just can't wait to see what Insomniac Click can do with a game all its own.

Facebook working to bring Credits to mobile browsers [Rumor]

The rumored Project Spartan, Facebook's HTML5-centric effort to escape the App Store via your phone's web browser, could make bookoo bucks. Bloomberg reports that, according to three unnamed sources, Facebook is in talks with developers in an effort to bring Facebook Credits to mobile browsers. Couple a mobile version of Facebook--complete with support from app and game developers including the omnipotent Zynga--and a payment platform to support shopping within those games, and Facebook becomes its own mobile app company of sorts.

Purchases made within Facebook-connected apps downloaded from the App Store or Android Market don't provide Facebook with the 30 percent cut it enjoys on the web, thanks to Facebook Credits. So, it only makes sense that, if the company is focused on a mobile browser-based Facebook offering, that its cash cow would be included. Speaking of cows, it's rumored that Zynga is working on a number HTML5-based versions of its hit games, including FarmVille, for this new mobile browser Facebook.

Bloomberg event hints at an upcoming change to how new apps and games might be discovered on the web version of Facebook. Citing more unnamed sources, Bloomberg reports that Facebook might soon have a separate News Feed solely for posts related to Facebook games and apps that will appear on the right side of the browser window.

FrontierVille New Years RSVP Prizes: Everything you need to know

Along with the New Years Party Goals that were released in FrontierVille earlier today, comes a new collection event in the game, which will have users collecting RSVPs for their New Years Party, so that you can upgrade your dance floor to intricately decorated and massive proportions just in time for the ball to drop ringing in the new year.

While you'll need to collect just a few RSVPs to set your party into motion technically (that is, in order to bring some of the FrontierVille cast out onto the dance floor), that isn't their only purpose. In fact, collect enough RSVPs, either by completing the New Years Party Goals, or by earning them from friends, and you'll be able to trade them in for some awesome themed items.

Meet us behind the break for a look at the six prizes that are available, and how you'll earn them. First and foremost, before you can earn any prizes, you'll need to start gathering RSVPs, which is where a little help from your neighbors will really help you progress. As we stated before, you'll be able to earn free single RSVPs from completing some of the New Year Party Goals (or collecting bonuses posted by your friends after they complete the goals), but in order to really upgrade your party, you'll need to collect varying amounts of RSVPs, with a certain number being required to upgrade your Dance Floor a single level.

After you upgrade your Dance Floor to level 2 as part IV of the V part New Years Goal series (a task that requires you to have 10 RSVPs), you'll be able to continue upgrading your Dance Floor by collecting even more. This is done by clicking on the Dance Floor and clicking on the "Invite Friends" button, bringing up the a window like the one below, where you'll be able to post an Invite directly to your friends' walls. Be careful though, as all of your friends will be listed, not just your FrontierVille neighbors, so make sure you're not inadvertently spamming people that don't play the game.

The Dance Floor has six levels, with each subsequent level adding more decorations and more of the FrontierVille cast to your party. To start, you'll have Frontier Jack and Miss Fanny Wildcat, but over time, your party will grow to include Hank, Humble Bob and so on. Levels 3 through 6 of the Dance Floor upgrades will cost anywhere from 20 - 250 RSVPs to complete. You'll be able to upgrade your Dance Floor by simply clicking on the item and selecting "Upgrade Party!" from the drop-down menu that appears. Of course, you won't actually be able to upgrade until you have the required number of RSVPs for the party's next level, but a handy pop-up will let you know how many you've yet to earn.

Along with simply upgrading the Dance Floor to a more intricately decorated item, you'll also unlock some redeemable prizes for each level you upgrade to. The Prizes are unlocked as soon as your Party is upgraded, and are as follows:

New Years Sign - 5 RSVPs
Mini Bar - 10 RSVPs
Hooch Brut - 20 RSVPs
Party Pig - 50 RSVPs
Party Hats - 100 RSVPs
Confetti Cannon - 250 RSVPs

As you can see from the list above, this is way more than just a simple side-quest associated with the New Years Party Goals, as this is a full collection event, that will likely require lots of time and dedication on your part (along with a lot of very generous friends), if you'd like to earn enough RSVPs to unlock the most "expensive" items.

If nothing else, everyone should at least try to earn the Party Pig, as this is simply a fantastic animal, wearing a party hat and shutter shades - Shutter Shades! How cool is that!?

While the pop-up above states that you'll have to wait until December 31 to start the countdown, this isn't entirely accurate, as you can actually start the countdown whenever you'd like, by clicking on the Dance Floor and selecting "Start Countdown." This will allow you to redeem all prizes that you've unlocked up to that point. Don't worry about losing those other prizes though, as you can "throw a party" once per day, until the event is done, and you'll be able to receive any subsequent prizes that you've earned in the meantime by doing so. It should also be noted that your RSVP progress is saved permanently, so even if you decide to start the countdown before New Years Eve proper, you won't have to start collecting RSVPs from scratch, which is definitely a good thing.

And there you have it! Everything you need to throw a complete New Years Party in FrontierVille, along with tons of cool prizes and decorations to boot! What a way to end a year!

CityVille: Limited Edition Penguin now available as a Free Gift

If you're looking to add even more winter whimsy to your town in CityVille, and the Winter items already released this week aren't doing it for you, you'll be happy to know that Zynga has added a new (and free) item to the game via the game's free gifts page. The item, as you might have already guessed, is the limited edition Penguin.

This isn't a sculpture or an otherwise inanimate item - it's a "live" Penguin, an animal item that would look great in any user's barnyard, or would look equally adorable next to a Christmas Tree lot or another decidedly winter-themed area.

To send this Penguin to your friends, simply head to the Free Gifts page, and then scroll to the very bottom, as the Penguin is now the last item on the list. Zynga itself has announced that the Penguin is a limited edition animal, meaning that it won't be around forever. An exact "expiration" date hasn't been made, so it'll be interesting to see if it is available as long as the snow (until March), or if it will disappear much sooner.

Either way, don't take any chances on missing out on this cute little fella (emphasis on "little") - send one to your friends as soon as possible (and ask for one in return), while you know it will still be available!

Check out the rest of our Holiday 2010 coverage right here.

What do you think of this little Penguin in CityVille?

CityVille: Neighbors can now help in quest completion - accept all the help you can get!

In a very appreciated new update, Zynga has announced that they have changed the way neighbor visits work in CityVille, so that a particular friend's actions will no longer negatively impact your own quest completion. To be specific, let's take an example of a quest that asks you to collect from houses 30 times.

Before this update, if your friends came to your town and collected from five homes, you would not earn progress towards your quest. What's more, they would have, in effect, "stolen" your ability to do so, as you would then have to wait for your homes to recharge, before you could collect from them again. Not a big deal with homes that only take a few minutes to recharge (like the Country Home, which takes just 5 minutes), but when it comes to some other buildings, this could set you back hours, or even days, if you were working on a quest that asked you to collect from a particular building.

Another example of this comes with the Italian Restaurant quest line (pictured), which asks you to collect from Terraced Brownstones 20 times. Formerly, if your friends collected from these buildings, you would have to wait a full six hours before you could manually collect from them again and earn progress on your own quest.

With this new update, however, friends will no longer be able to steal your progress in quests; in fact, instead of negating your progress, they will now count towards your own quest completion. This is great news for lower level players, that may not have enough energy to finish some of the starter repetition quests on their own (without waiting for their energy to recharge, that is), as they can now simply ask their friends to come to their cities, complete some specific tasks, and have that count in their own game.

That being the case, feel free to accept any and all help your friends give you in CityVille from here on in, without the worry of them accidentally slowing down your quest progress.

Cafe World Prep for the New Year Mission: Everything you need to know

Along with the New Years Party missions in Cafe World (the length of which you guys have made very clear that you don't appreciate; we can't blame you), Zynga has added another themed mission to the game. This newest mission is called "Prep for the New Year," and it comes with a very hefty requirement; so much so in fact that Zynga has even described the mission as being for "expert" players:

Before you can welcome a new year, you've still got so much to do this year! Only expert chefs can get it all done.

The mission requires you to complete three large tasks, but don't worry - we have everything you need to know to make this mission as painless, and quick, as humanly possible. Meet us behind the break for all of the details about this new mission. The three tasks for this mission are as follows:

Earn 90,000 coins
Spice 30 Neighbor Stoves
Prepare 200 Stuffed Mushrooms

Before you start panicking over the third stipulation - the preparation of 200 Stuffed Mushrooms, rest assured that we've figured out a quick and easy way to complete this step with ease, even if it will cost quite a bit of money to do.

While the other steps are simple enough (simply serve enough dishes to earn 90,000 coins, and visit neighbors 30 times to spice dishes - if you don't have enough neighbors, visit the same neighbors over multiple days), the Stuffed Mushrooms portion takes a bit of an explanation.

While you are more than welcome to attempt to actually prepare, cook, and serve 200 Stuffed Mushrooms (that's 200 individual preparations of the entire Stuffed Mushrooms dish - not 200 servings), we doubt that many users have enough stoves, time, or even patience to wait around for them to cook. Stuffed mushrooms take an entire day to cook, and even if we said that the average user has 20 stoves on hand (lower level players would of course have much fewer), that would still take a player 10 days to finish the quest. 10 days of doing nothing by cooking Stuffed Mushrooms over and over again. That doesn't sound like the most enjoyable gameplay experience to us, but luckily, if you have 360,000 coins that you are willing to spend without receiving any return, you can take advantage of the wording provided by this quest.

Since it only says to "Prepare" the Stuffed Mushrooms dish, you can simply add the dish to a stove, toss it, and cook it again. I personally used this technique, so I can confirm that it works. Ultimately, whether you do cook each dish to completion, or just toss it, you'll be spending the 360,000 coins either way; it's whether or not you want to receive any profit in return that will be the deciding factor here.

Whatever the case may be, once you complete this mission, you'll receive 5,000 coins, and 5,000 Cafe Points. Needless to say, the rewards here (especially the Cafe Points), make this one worth completing. And with our helpful tips on how to work the system, you too should be able to complete this mission with ease, before it expires from the game.

Cafe World New Years Party Catering Order: Everything you need to know

As we told you yesterday, Zynga has been hard at work in Cafe World, creating a New Year's event that has made many users extremely upset by the length and the complexity of the tasks therein. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, then, but your to-do list is about to get just a bit longer, as a second New Year's themed catering order has been released in the game.

Unfortunately, if you're hoping to complete all of the New Years Party Goals, you must complete this catering order, as it is a requirement for Part VIII of the mission set (as of this writing). Perhaps with enough encouragement from fans, Zynga will change the Catering Order to be more voluntary, but as it stands, if you want to know everything you'll need to finish this new job, meet us behind the break.

As with most other Catering Orders, you'll have just three days to earn a three-star rating, but as this is one of the more complex orders we've come across, we severely doubt that three days will be enough for most users. First and foremost, you'll need to cook four, count them, four dishes to complete this job. What's more - each and every one of these recipes is a locked New Years recipe, which are only unlocked by completing New Years goals. That being the case, while it might be tempting to start this mission right now, in order to get it out of the way, unless you've already unlocked all four dishes, we'd advise on waiting. After all, why waste your time collecting collectible items (there are two in this catering order), when you'll just end up getting a one-star rating anyway?

That humble suggestion aside, you'll need to cook Mini Crab Cakes 138 times (a 9 hour dish), Beef Skewers 138 times (a 12 hour dish), Salmon Rillettes 75 times (a 10 hour dish), and Bread Pudding 75 times (an 8 hour dish). You can either cook these dishes as normal, or you can spend anywhere from 16-24 Cafe Cash to unlock each dish's requirements.

In addition, you'll need to collect 10 Party Hates, and 10 Bottles of Champagne with the help of friends. You'll do this by clicking on the "Ask" button next to either item, which takes you to a reverse of the game's free gifts page, where you can send an individual request to the Cafe World neighbors that you think would be most likely to send you one. You can also unlock these items with Cafe Cash - each Party Hat costs 3 Cafe Cash, while each Bottle of Champagne costs 4 Cafe Cash.

If you can complete this order in three days, you'll receive the three star rating, 9 Catering Points, 6,300 Cafe Points, 141,750 coins and a 2011 Monument. Finishing after three days have elapsed, but before five days have passed earned you two-stars, 6 Catering Points, 4,500 Cafe Points, and 101,250 coins. Finally, if you finish the mission at anytime after five days have passed, you'll receive a single star, 3 Catering Points, 2,700 Cafe Points, and 60,750 coins.

You'll be able to bring 10 of your friends in on the mission with you, for a total of an 11 member catering crew. Whether that will be enough to finish this difficult order on time, however, will remain to be seen. Good luck to all those who attempt it (I'm personally holding out for a while).

FarmVille Super Bowl items make a comeback this weekend

As the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers go head-to-head in Super Bowl XLV this weekend, FarmVille will be celebrating by re-releasing its limited edition 'Farm Bowl' items over the weekend, according to FarmVille Freak. There's no word on whether all of last year's items will make a return, but we're voting for another appearance by the FarmVille Referee Cow, which was an adoptable animal, and the two cheerleading chickens, Joy and Cheer.

Also looking forward to fans using their farms to craft an homage to their favorite teams. Check out some of our favorite Super Bowl farm art from last year in the gallery below.

FrontierVille 35 x 35 Land Expansion Goals: Everything you need to know

Just yesterday, we brought you the news that Zynga was looking to release a new land expansion in FrontierVille "soon." Well, partners, it turns out that soon means now, as not one, but two new expansions are now available for your land. While our assumption was that the next two expansions would be those bringing us to 37 x 37 and 41 x 41 squares, Zynga has instead decided to add an extra step into the mix.

As usual, though, both of these expansions must first be unlocked by completing a series of missions. The first expansion, which will bring your Homestead to a size of 35 x 35, can be accessed by first logging into the game, and then purchasing the accompanying mission set for 1,000 coins.

This five-part mission series starts off with a bit of a challenge, and doesn't let up. You'll need to sell dozens of animals, chop trees hundreds of times, collect dozens of items, and harvest hundreds of crops just to make it to the final mission, which has difficult stipulations in and of itself. Unfortunately, if you're not one to spend Horseshoes to unlock quests, you're in for quite the workout with these ones. Meet us behind the break for a full look at this five-part land expansion quest set.
The first step of this five-part expansion quest is called Giant Preparations, and it fits the name perfectly. You'll need to complete three tasks to move on:

Collect 30 Lunch Pails
Harvest 100 Tomatoes
Have or Craft 15 Fancy Clothes

The Lunch Pails, thankfully, are earned through individual gift requests that you'll send to your friends. If you receive a request, you'll also receive a Lunch Pail for helping your friends, which should speed this process up. Likewise, the Tomatoes only take 15 minutes to grow. Finally, the Fancy Clothing can be crafted inside the General Store using 2 Ribbon and 2 Clothes each. Your rewards for finishing it are 150 XP and 75 coins.

Part II of this mission series is where things really start to kick into high gear. If you're waiting to finish these missions at a later time, then save trees now, as you'll need them for this part of the quest.

Chop Trees 200 Times
Clear 5 Thorns
Collect 25 Fire

Yes, you read that correctly - chop trees 200 times. To be fair, this doesn't require you to chop down 200 entire trees - rather, simply perform the act of "chopping" 200 times, but it's still quite a high number for someone that keeps their land forever clear of trees. Likewise, the Thorns may take some time to spawn on your land if you have too many decorative items or trees on it, so keep that in mind. Finally, the Fire can be crafted inside the Covered Wagon for 7 Wood and 5 Cloth each.

Finish Part II and you'll receive 175 XP and 100 coins. Your fire will be taken from you at the end of the mission.

Part III continues to throw out the high numbers, but luckily, if you're reading this now, you'll have time to prepare before the mission is really upon you.

Sell 80 Adult Cows
Have 25 Meadow Muffins (a collection item)
Gather 5 Neighbors in Your Poop Shoveling Crew

Creating your pooper scooper crew is as simple as asking five neighbors to join, while the Meadow Muffins will likely be earned in the process of growing and subsequently selling the whopping 80 adult cows. Your rewards for this step of the quest are 200 XP and 100 coins.

For Part IV, you'll be forced back to "normal" farm work by harvesting crops. You'll also have to gather quite a few collection items from around your Homestead.

Collect 30 Wagon Trailers
Harvest 300 Wheat
Collect 8 Peach Cobblers (collection item)

The Wagon Trailers can be received by asking your friends to send them to you. Hopefully, this process won't take you much longer than the time it takes for your Wheat to grow - a single day. As for Peach Cobblers, you'll find them by harvesting from your Peach Trees on your Homestead. If you don't have enough on your own, you can also ask your friends to send you extra Peach Cobblers via the in-game wishlist.

As we approach the finally of this event, you'll receive just 75 XP and 100 coins for finishing this mission. Both the Wagon Trailers and Peach Cobblers will be removed from your account.

Finally, Part V asks you to collect and/or craft even more items, and put some of your other fruit trees to work.

Have / Craft 30 Fireworks
Have / Craft 15 Cakes
Tend Apricot Trees 100 Times

Fireworks can be crafted inside the Cabin, at a rate of 1 Saltpeter and 5 Fire per 5 Fireworks created. The Cakes can be crafted inside the Inn using 2 Fire and 4 Batter each. Batters themselves are crafted (also in the Inn) for 20 Food and 900 coins.

Once you have completed this final mission in the 35 x 35 land expansion series, you will receive 400 XP, 200 coins, and the notice that you have unlocked what Zynga is calling the Giant Homestead. Believe me, by this point, you will have definitely earned the extra space.

FrontierVille 37 x 37 Land Expansion Goals: Everything you need to know

Howdy partners! Earlier today, we brought you the news concerning the newest land expansion to be released in FrontierVille, which will bring your Homestead to a size of 35 x 35. These missions are tough - nay, brutal - but if you can manage to complete them (luckily they aren't timed), you'll be rewarded with a nice chunk of extra space out on the frontier. But that's not all! Zynga isn't content to simply allow you to expand your land once more, as they have already completely planned out the 37 x 37 Land Expansion missions as well!

We have everything you need to know about this new mission series. Note: You must first complete the expansion to 35 x 35 before having access to these. It's also unknown as of right now whether these missions will instantly be available, or whether they are slowly rolling out to users. Still, in the interest of planning ahead, meet us behind the break for a look at this next land expansion quest set.
Expanding your land to 37 x 37 squares is a five-part process. As you may have expected, the high difficulty / complexity level set in the 35 x 35 land expansion missions has been carried over here. Brace yourself for a long road ahead. Part I asks you to complete three tasks, starting with a large collection of items.

Collect 35 Magnifying Lenses
Harvest 100 Peanuts
Tend 40 Adult Pigs

Luckily, you won't have to sell these pigs - simply tend 40 in total, even if you have to come back to the same pig more than once (they are ready to feed every six hours). Peanuts, meanwhile take four days to grow, and the Magnifying Glasses can be earned by asking your friends to send them to you.

Your rewards for finishing Part I of V are 200 XP and 100 coins.

Part II will likely strike a negative nerve with many users, who don't have enough room on their homestead to even allow debris to grow. Hopefully, you still have some room from growing those peanuts to grow more crops, as you'll need that as well.

Have / Craft 25 Fire
Clobber 25 Groundhogs
Clear 10 Cacti

Fire can be crafted inside the Covered Wagon for 5 Cloth and 7 wood each. Groundhogs, of course, can be brought out by harvesting crops. Clover is a five minute crop, so feel free to plant mass waves of this cheap and quick crop in order to bring out as many Groundhogs as quickly as you can. Your rewards for finishing Part II are 225 XP and 125 coins.

Part III will require you to earn some help from friends, but it won't come from a normal gift request feature, as you'll need to gather enough friends to create a "Detective / Land Expansion Crew."

Gather 5 neighbors in your "Detective / Land Expansion Crew"
Have / Craft 5 Feather Beds
Collect the Inn's Daily Bonus 3 Times

Feather Beds can be crafted inside the Sawmill, with each bed costing 1 Furnishings and 2 Comforters. Comforters are made inside the Chicken Coop, while Furnishings can also be crafted in the Sawmill. Finish Part III and you'll receive 250 XP and 150 coins.

Moving onto Part IV, you'll need to collect even more Daily Bonuses, as well as revisit the Animal Cannons that were released in the game some months ago.

Collect the Foundry's Daily Bonus 3 Times
Clear 30 Grass
Use the Fox Cannon 20 Times

Remember, you'll need to have a lot of Poop to turn into Saltpeters and eventually Powder Kegs in order to power the Fox Cannon, so make sure to spend some time tending your animals in order to collect more. Your final prizes before the finale are 275 XP and 175 coins.

Finally Part V will see you tending to some animals, harvesting some crops, and collecting even more items from friends. You've worked hard to get to this point - don't give up now!

Tend 20 Horses
Harvest 400 Wheat
Collect 30 Landgrant Glues (ask friends)

Wheat is available to harvest after growing for one full day, which gives you at least some time to collect the glue in the meantime. The kicker here will be the tending of 20 Horses, since that tends to be a fairly rare item on users' Homesteads. Either way, if you are able to push through this final event, you'll not only receive notice that you've unlocked the 37 x 37 expansion, but you'll also earn 300 XP and 200 coins as a final prize.

FrontierVille: Valentine's Day decorations have arrived!

While you're busy completing the Chapel of Love and new Land Expansion goals in FrontierVille, remember to take a few seconds to head into the game's store to look at the new supply of Valentine's Day themed decorations that have been released. It's been a while since we've seen any new decorations being released in the game, and Zynga has made up for this in a big way.

As of this writing, there are 19 new items available under the "Special" section of the game's store. A small sampling of them can be seen in action in the picture to the right.

Of course, there are plenty of items here that are available for Horseshoes (Loveseats, a Tunnel of Love, and more), but those shopping on a virtual budget have some cute items to choose from as well, like Candles, Flowerbeds, or even large Planters. Meet us behind the break for a full look at these new items - some of which will only be available for a limited time.

Here's a complete rundown of the items, along with prices for those that have the store discount bonus active on their account. Note, if you don't have the store discount, your prices on coin-only items will be slightly higher.

Table for Two - 35 Horseshoes
Cosy Loveseat - 12 Horseshoes
Tunnel of Love - 45 Horseshoes
Valentine Planter - 7600 coins and 60 Wood
Huggy Bear - 25 Horseshoes
Valentine Vase - 4 Horseshoes
Bed of Flowers - 14,250 coins
Rose Garden - 4 Horseshoes
Romantic Candles - 3800 coins and 40 Wood

Kissing Booth - 40 Horseshoes
Assorted Candy - 7600 coins
Green Candy - 7600 coins and 60 Wood
Orange Candy - 7600 coins and 60 Wood
Pink Candy - 7600 coins and 60 Wood
Purple Candy - 7600 coins and 60 Wood
Lovely Card - 2850 coins and 20 Wood
Uber Chocolate - 2375 coins

Dozen Roses - 3800 coins
Flowery Can - 9500 coins

Some of these items (mostly those that are 100% Valentine's Day in nature, like the candy pieces or Kissing Booth, as examples) are limited edition items that will only be available in the game for the next 13 days. The other items will apparently be permanent additions to the store, in the same way that you can still buy some Fall themed items in the store that were released last year.

With all of these items to choose from, it's safe to say that at least this player's Homestead will be decked out for the holiday of love - will yours?

CityVille Warehouse: Everything you need to know

At the end of January, Zynga officially announced that item storage would be coming to CityVille via a new Warehouse feature. Luckily for all of us, we don't have to wait any longer to see just what the feature entails, as it is now available in the game! Once this feature rolls out to your game, you'll have a new Warehouse goal waiting for you along the left-hand side of the game screen.

The goal is simply called "Store Decorations," and will see you removing the Warehouse from your inventory (yes, it's being given to all users for free), gathering neighbors to work in the Warehouse as staff, and then placing a decoration inside it. Luckily, the Warehouse only takes up as much space as the average home in your game, but you'll need to be at least level 12 in the game to have access to it.

To see more of how the Warehouse works in your game, meet us behind the break.
Before you can staff your Warehouse, you must construct its frame, which is done with 10 Whacks. Once the entire frame is built, you'll be asked to gather 3 friends together to be the staff of your Warehouse. As with other buildings of this type, you'll have to send out individual requests to your CityVille neighbors asking them to join your crew.

Only after you have a full Crew will your Warehouse become functional. To start, you'll only be able to hold three items inside your Warehouse, but it can be expanded. This is a simple process that sees you looking inside your Warehouse and clicking on the "Add More Space" button. From there, you'll ask your friends to help you expand your Warehouse, with each friend that helps counting as one additional storage space in your Warehouse.

To actually store items in the Warehouse, simply click on the Arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen - the same arrow you click on to switch to the Rotation and Move tools - and click on the new Warehouse icon. With this active, click on the decoration (only decorations can be stored) that you'd like to store and it will be put into the Warehouse.

Note: At this time, your Warehouse can only be expanded to hold a maximum of 12 items, and you can only have one Warehouse at this time. Hopefully Zynga will add more in the future.

As a further note, you are free to add your Warehouse back into your inventory if you find yourself running out of room in your town. However, the Warehouse must be empty for it to be storable, and you'll lose all expansion progress on the Warehouse should you ever decide to pull it back out of your inventory again. That being the case, it seems better to just leave the Warehouse empty in your town if you have no desire to use it, rather than have to go through the process of expanding the building all over again.

Whether you'll want to expand your Warehouse at all, however, is up to you. Zynga has stated that they are looking for feedback about this new feature on the game's official forums, and many users are already telling them what they think - mainly that the storage capacity is too low.

FarmVille: Clover Chickens appearing in Golden Mystery Eggs

If you've been saving up FarmVille's Golden Mystery Eggs as you simply don't need another Golden Chicken in your coop (or if you've been avoiding claiming the mystery eggs from your friends altogether), you will be happy to know that a new prize has now started appearing when users open up their Golden Mystery Eggs. FarmVille Feed has the scoop on how you can now receive a Clover Chicken (part of the game's St. Patrick's Day item theme) from a Golden Mystery Egg.

Of course, this is entirely random, and there's no guarantee that you'll actually receive a Clover Chicken as opposed to another prize, but the chance of receiving a free Clover Chicken is always better than having to spend 50 Gold to receive a Clover Chicken in the new Pot of Gold feature, right?

It's great to see Zynga adding new rewards to at least one Mystery Egg, which had gone a bit stale, in my humble opinion. Let us know if you receive any other new rewards when you open eggs in the future!

Check out the rest of our St. Patrick's Day 2011 coverage right here.

Have you received a Clover Chicken from a Mystery Egg?

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Bouncing Pinto Horse, Rainbow Balloon Arch, Tulip Arch

Here's something interesting - we've come across new unreleased images of a few items in FarmVille, but they don't look to fit into any one theme. There are three items here - a Bouncing Horse that looks to be modeled after the Pinto, a Rainbow Balloon Arch, and a Tulip Arch.

While the Tulip Arch looks like something that might be released as part of an upcoming Spring theme (or even as part of what will surely be an Easter egg collection event), the other two items are bit more "random," if you'll excuse the phrase. Are these party items from a new party theme? Is the Bouncy Horse part of a new theme of playground items, taking up where the Children's Day theme from 2010 left off (as three such "bouncing" animals were released then as well)? Are these simply items that will be released as new Mystery Gift prizes or on the free gifts page?

All of these questions certainly hold merit, but of course we won't know the answer to them until these items officially launch in the game. When will that be? We're not sure, but we'll be sure to let you know when they do.

FarmVille Duck Pond Expansion: Everything you need to know (again)

While Zynga released Duck Pond expansions in FarmVille at the very beginning of March, the feature (like so many others upon release) was stricken with bugs; however, these bugs were so bad that Zynga decided to remove the ability to expand from the game altogether, and has only started to slowly "re-roll" it back out to users this afternoon.

If you didn't expand your Duck Pond the first time it was available (very few were able to either due to the glitches or simply its short lifespan in the game), now's your chance. Your Duck Pond can be expanded twice, each time adding ten spots of storage - that's a total of 40 Ducks when all is said and done. As with the initial construction of the Duck Pond, as this item doesn't require the "traditional" building materials - those being Wooden Boards, Bricks - you'll instead have to gather up Watering Cans and Shovels to expand the Duck Pond.

Meet us behind the break for more details on this (apparently now working) feature.
Luckily, this is a case where we know exactly what each expansion will require, regardless of whether or not you actually have the Duck Pond Expansion update active on your farm (yet) or not. Each expansion requires the same materials - 20 each of Watering Cans and Shovels. That's 40 items total and, again, you'll gain 10 extra spots of storage each time you expand, to the maximum of 40 ducks. Once you complete the expansions, you'll be able to share some extra building materials with your friends.

As usual, there are a number of different ways to acquire Watering Cans and Shovels in your game. Here's a short recap:

Click on the "Ask for Help" button and ask your friends to send you these items
Purchase these items with Farm Cash for 1 Farm Cash per one individual ingredient
Look out for those free Shovels and Watering Cans being shared by your friends on the news feed
Have your friends send you these items via the Free Gifts page
Each both of these parts by opening up Special Delivery Boxes
Collect Watering Cans when harvesting Orchards that don't produce Mystery Seedlings

While the Duck Pond will not change in size or shape (or really change at all visually), your probability of receiving a Duckling when you collect from the Pond will increase, depending on the number of additional Ducks you add to it. This makes sense by the simple fact that there are more ducks that could potentially give off a Duckling each day. Of course, Ducklings have become more than readily available since the initial release of the Duck Pond, so this may not be a factor in helping you to decide whether or not to expand - we'd imagine clearing up your land would be though. At least it is for me.

FarmVille: Black Beauty Horse renamed to "Black Gypsy Horse"

No, you're not seeing things. If you browse through the FarmVille marketplace looking for the Black Beauty Horse which was released at the end of February in the Fairy Time limited edition item theme, you'll notice that the Black Beauty Horse has been renamed to the Black Gypsy Horse.

The same goes for all Black Beauty Horses that were purchased from the store - they have all been automatically renamed as well. The reasoning behind the change is anyone's guess. It could have been a copyright issue (Black Beauty is the name of both a novel and a film), or it could have simply been due to the fact that the Black Beauty Horse was nothing but a Black Gypsy Horse with a fancier name, and Zynga decided to change it to fit with the other Gypsy Horses that have been released in the past.

Whatever the reason, rest assured that the stats of this horse remain unchanged - it's "harvestable" once every three days, and you'll receive 2600 experience points for purchasing it, if you have yet to do so. The Black Gypsy Horse will be available to purchase in the market for the next 6 days.

Has the name change on the Black Beauty Horse changed your feelings about the animal? Do you think players should receive their Farm Cash in a refund if they purchased the horse due to being a fan of either the book or film?

CityVille Sam Reports / Sam n' Paul's Chat Quests: Everything you need to know

Zynga has released a new quest series to CityVille surrounding Samantha, and her quest to interview the main characters in the game. To unlock this quest line in your game, you will have needed to complete the Dr. Sheperd and Louise romance quest line, ending with the quest called "Even More L'Amour," which sees you sending the couple to Paris. The first two quests in this new series are called Sam Reports and Sam n' Paul's Chat. Sam Reports is a quest about Ruth, but it may not seem like that directly. You'll be charged with making Ruth's museum exhibit one to behold. There are three tasks required to complete it:

Have a Museum
Collect from Community Buildings 5 Times
Place 1 Pink Flowers

The Pink Flowers is the prize you'll receive for turning into the Forever Young Collection, which is completed by collecting from the Cosmetics Store. Meanwhile, most of you likely already have a Museum by this point, so this step should be completed for you. Once you complete this quest, you'll receive 200 coins.

Once you finish this quest for Ruth, you'll move onto a quest called Sam n' Paul's Chat. Meet us behind the break for all of the details about that quest. and how to complete it.
For Sam n' Paul's Chat, you'll move onto speaking with the in-game carpenter, that appears each time you want to chop a tree in your town (normally after purchasing an expansion). However, it seems as though Zynga might not have thought this one through, or they simply want it to be extremely expensive to accomplish. There are two tasks here:

Chop 10 Trees in Your Town
Have 3 Strawberry Jams

The Strawberry Jams aren't the troublesome item here, as these as a Strawberry Crop Collection item, earned by simply planting and harvesting strawberries which takes only minutes. The problem is when it comes to chopping the 10 trees. Unless you just so happen to plan on expanded your land (that is, you already have the permits and the coins necessary to do so), or unless you just so happen to have saved trees because you liked the look of them, you'll likely not have a single "choppable" tree in your entire city, forcing you to expand. This will force you to require land permits, and most likely save up coins for the now highly increased price of expanding each time. This also doesn't take into account expansions that may not have ten trees on them, leaving you to expand not just once, but twice to complete this single goal. If there were ever a time to go for the City Cash completion option, this very well might be it.

Whatever you decide, your reward for finishing this quest is 150 Goods. That doesn't seem nearly worth it though. Either way, we'll make sure to bring you more details on the rest of Sam's interviewing quest line as they become available.

Farmerama's Bigpoint knows how badly Zynga wants out of Facebook

Facebook locked
"Oh they desperately want to," Bigpoint chief games officer Philip Resiberger told GamesIndustry.biz. "They have plans, they've had plans for the last two years. Everyone wants to reduce their dependence on Facebook I think." That's what everyone has said, but even the FarmVille maker's upcoming Project Z is tied rather intrinsically to Facebook, so what gives?

"Eventually it will come, but as some attempts have shown in the past, it's not as easy to understand the world outside Facebook because it's a totally different world," Reisberger elaborated during an interview with GI.biz "That's why Bigpoint is in a very good position: we're not just the ones developing, we've mastered, to a certain degree, the distribution."

But Bigpoint's (known best for Facebook-less social games like Farmerama and Skyrama) Resiberger goes on to compliment Zynga on its innovations in social games. Of course, it's safe to take Reisberger's earlier comments with a grain of salt: He works with a company that creates social games outside of Facebook--crazy, we know. And that company is doing quite well for itself, with 250 million registered players on Bigpoint, according to Reisberger.

It makes you wonder, however, is Zynga really drawing in new players, or are meteoric launches like CastleVille more thanks to its existing players than new ones? Most would go with the former, at least for the time being. Will Project Z and zTags finally help the CityVille creator bring in new players from throughout the web? Stay tuned for 2012.

Do you think Zynga relies too much on its existing player base for successful games? Would you rather play social games on Facebook or elsewhere?

Android gets with the times, new Facebook brings FarmVille Express

Android just got caught up with the Joneses. Facebook announced recently that the new Facebook Mobile platform has hit Android devices everywhere, meaning fans of Google's smartphone operating system can access all the mobile web apps Facebook Mobile has to offer. Most importantly (of course), that includes HTML5 games like Zynga's FarmVille Express.

In fact, that means a number of HTML5-based social games are now available through Facebook Mobile for Android, including wooga's Magic Land, Moblyng's Word Racer Live, Storm8's World War and more. That's according to Facebook's announcement, which doesn't include games like the HTML5-based Words With Friends and Zynga Poker.

However, HTML5--a web application development method used commonly for games played in mobile web browsers--is largely available on both iPhone, iPad and Android devices, it's a safe bet that these games are accessible through Facebook on Android. (Before the Facebook update, Android users could simply visit "m.farmville.com" to access FarmVille Express.) HTML5 is making big strides in becoming a viable method for making and playing social games.

In fact, Happy Aquarium maker CrowdStar's CEO Peter Relan thinks that HTML5 is the path to 1 billion players of a single game. However, if you ask folks like Zynga Germany's Paul Bakaus, we're a long way from that kind of reach through HTML5. If game makers want to beat Rovio's Angry Birds to the coveted 1 billion fans, they might have to do it the old-fashioned (?) way: get on every game platform you can possibly imagine.

How do you prefer to play games like FarmVille while on the go: mobile web or mobile app? How long will it be before HTML5 games look like their standard app counterparts?

That's a big table: Zynga Poker hits the big screen on Google TV

Is that 13-inch laptop screen you're dealing in on in Zynga Poker simply not big enough? How does a 55-inch HD screen sound? We thought so. Zynga announced that its hit poker game has landed on Google TV, the search giant's ailing set-top box platform. Players can download the Zynga Poker app on Google TV, the first TV platform to offer the game.

VentureBeat points out that Zynga Poker (and we imagine other Facebook games) were already accessible through Google TV's support for Flash-based websites. But this dedicated version is "especially optimized for playing poker from the comfort of your own couch," Zynga said in a blog post. According to AppData, Zynga's age-old poker game has over 29 million monthly players across Facebook, iPhone, Android phones and more.

Of course, Zynga is looking to grow that player base with this release, but things aren't looking so hot for Google TV. Logitech, the primary partner for the platform, just ditched Google's effort after losing $100 million on its Logitech Revue box since last year, according to VentureBeat. Regardless, this could serve as a launchpad for Zynga Poker--and other games from the publisher, for that matter--to expand onto other connected TV options.

Devices like the Roku box have already invited big time casual games like Angry Birds, and PlayJam is making strides in smart TV gaming. In the grand scheme of things, it only makes sense. If companies like CrowdStar and Rovio want to hit that 1 billion fan mark, the most popular screen in the home is a fine place to start.

Would you rather play your social games on a bigger screen than what you play on now? Is mobile or TV-based social gaming more appealing to you?

CNN Games: When social games fever hits the virtual newstands

Arkadium Stop the Presses on CNN Games
CNN has opened a spankin' new games portal on their site, named simply, "CNN Games" and powered by social games stalwart, Arkadium. Aside from having to put up with a 15-second ad before each game loads, all twenty-five of Arkadium's games are free, including established favorites such as Mahjongg Dimensions. You don't have to sign up as a CNN member to play (plus, Facebook Connect doesn't seem far behind), but CNN would like it if you did. Doing so allows you to "save your scores, get on the Leaderboard and challenge your friends".

We really shouldn't be surprised, but it's hard not to be. Certainly, there's been a trend where companies have been slapping games onto everything from banks to blogs. Some have even made it their core business to slap games onto other businesses. There's this belief that turning something into a social game will make it more popular. MySpace attempted a failed resurrection by investing in games. Social games killed the daytime soap, only for the soaps to attempt a comeback as games. Social games for social good are the watchwords of organizations such as Games4Change, and businesses such as GamesThatGive. But for an international news organization to invest in a generic, casual games portal is just mind-boggling. With the exception of Stop the Presses, a timed word game, nothing at CNN Games has anything to do with the news or the CNN brand (fancy a board game, anyone?).

However, consider this -- it was the rivalry between Joseph Pulitzer's New York World and William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal in the 1890s that brought us the modern-day, newspaper comic strip. In 1895, Pulitzer had convinced comics creator Richard Felton Outcault to publish "The Yellow Kid" for his newspaper. But Hearst saw the value in it and snatched Outcault away for his paper. Suddenly, the funnies became serious business as both owners believed that comics were their ticket to more readers. It sounds absurd, but those of us who grew up on newsprint remember the value of the funnies.

As major news producers move from print to the web, they're going to need new ways to compete online. I wonder if social games are going to be for news sites, the way comic strips were for newspapers.

Do you think social games can hit it big on news sites or that news sites can win readers by adding games, social or otherwise?

Digital Chocolate's Galaxy Life on Facebook has quite a deceiving title

When you hear the words "Galaxy Life," what do you think? We don't know about you, but that sure sounds like living out life across the galaxy. No one ever said anything about epic intergalactic battles against friends and "the sinister dark forces." Nevertheless, that's what you'll be up to in Digital Chocolate's new strategy game game for Facebook and web, Galaxy Life.

The San Mateo, Calif.-based social game developer, best known for games like Millionaire City and Zombie Lane, launched the game simultaneously on Facebook and its own website in an effort to increase its reach. Galaxy Life lets players become leader of a colony of aliens called Starlings that look to create a peaceful planet amidst sinister (and ambiguous) dark forces. Players will vie for dominance over the new found territory amongst friends, or frenemies, both known and anonymous.

Of course, you'll do so by creating daunting armies and stalwart defensive structures with which to attack opposing colonies and defend your own. Players can also create alliances with fellow players--yup, this sounds like a strategy game, all right. Galaxy Life sounds like more of the same on paper, but its Facebook-connected social features are optional. If you decide to play on Digital Chocolate's website, you can build a network of friends without Facebook.
Galaxy Life in Action
"We've created a groundbreaking sci-fi game with great competitive and cooperative elements, along with fantastic characters," Digital Chocolate president Marc Metis said in a release. "Galaxy Life takes the best elements of the strategy and space genres to create an immersive game that players can engage with across different platforms."

At first glance, Galaxy Life has a ton of character, with smooth animations, fun tunes and sounds, and adorable artwork. However, the play hook doesn't seem all too different from games like Kabam's Edgeworld or Kixeye's War Commander. That said, this could change in due time. But give it a shot: This cartoon-like take on the genre could be your cup of tea.
